On the Ohio State Marching Band

For the editor: Those of us who are lucky enough to be at Football game between Ohio State and Iowa were treated to a fantastic halftime show, showcasing the collaboration of two outstanding bands. With an Elton John theme, TBBITL and the members of the group Iowa performed, in perfect synchronization, several songs and formations. Particularly memorable was the grand pianist with a movement on a cloth banner of black and ivory keys. To think of the hard work, energy and talent that went into this performance is mind boggling. The unity of the two groups, along with the football teams hugging at the end of the game, is a poignant reminder that intercollegiate competition is about more than the final score of the game. Bob Weiller

To bob: You thought it was cool, and I thought it was cool. But the most impressive thing was that Elton John himself loved it and tweeted his appreciation. Well done all around.

On Tom Brady, LeBron James and Tiger Woods

For the editor: As a fan, I play fantasy sports and imagine Tom Brady making the Super Bowl game-winning pass, Lebron James making the slam dunk that wins Game 7 of the NBA Championship, and Tiger Woods competing on the final hole of the Masters for a eagle to win another championship like no other. It’s fun to dream, but for the three super athletes, it’s time to stop and retire. I want them all to retire with their minds and bodies intact.

We have all seen Muhammad Ali suffer too much physical abuse and lose his ability to have a meaningful life after sports. Go home to Tom, Tiger and Lebron and enjoy the next phases of your life. You deserve to write the next chapter of your life in good physical and mental health.

About Art Schlichter

For the editor: I just read Article by Gregg Doyle on Art Schlichter. It was a beautiful article that made my heart ache for everyone involved. I grew up in Columbus, loving the Buckeyes all my life. I was enrolled at OSU when Art came to school. I met him once when I was in town with some friends. He was full of confidence, maybe a bit arrogant, but certainly backed everything up on the pitch.

He hurt so many people, including himself. I pray for all these people and for Art. I can only agree with you that there, before the grace of God, I go.

at Nancy: One of the saddest stories in Ohio sports history, and it never seems to end.
