Live music will bring Scottish stories to life at the Paisley Book Festival

The Written Word will be brought to life by live music during a special performance at the Paisley Book Festival.

Songs from the Last Page is an ambitious songwriting and live performance project, produced by composer Gareth Williams and Chamber Music Scotland.

The project creates new and warm music from the last lines of great Scottish and international fiction: turning endings into beginnings.

Supported by EventScotland as part of the 2022 Year of Stories, Songs from the Last Page will have its first performance at the Paisley Book Festival final event on Saturday 26th February.

A songwriting workshop will take place before the live musical performance by award-winning composer Gareth Williams, cellist Justyna Jablonska and violinist Aisling O’Dea.

The songs from the back page will premiere at the festival later this month

Paul Tracey, Chief Executive of Chamber Music Scotland, said: “The Scottish Year of Stories spotlights, celebrates and promotes the wealth of stories inspired, written or created in Scotland.

“We’re thrilled to be part of the Year of Stories, and can’t wait to bring ‘Songs from the Last Page’ to the fantastic Paisley Book Festival.”

The live musical performance features songs about some of Scotland’s most talented storytellers, such as Robert Louis Stevenson, Alasdair Gray and Janice Galloway.

The unique Paisley Book Festival program also includes an original song inspired by Duck Feet, the Renfrewshire dialect novel by Ely Percy.

Gordon Smith, VisitScotland Regional Director for Renfrewshire, added: “We are delighted to support Songs from the Last Page as part of the Year of Scottish Stories 2022.

“With the project’s first stage at the Paisley Book Festival, it will allow artists, writers and local communities to take part in the songwriting workshop and festival finale and be part of this musical celebration of Scottish writers and of their stories.”

Following its premiere at the Paisley Book Festival, ‘Songs from the Last Page’ will tour art festivals, libraries and community spaces across Scotland in 2022.

Paisley Book Festival is a popular people and place festival that runs until February 26th. The 2022 festival, Stories Mak Us, brings some of Scotland’s best writers and storytellers to Paisley for 10 days of fantastic events.
