“I thought it was a big mistake,” he told Entertainment Weekly. ‘[Marilyn] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess. She was just fabulous.

“Nobody shoots like that. And it was made for her. It was designed for her. No one else should be seen in this dress.

Controversial decision: Last week celebrity designer Bob Mackie said it was a ‘big mistake’ to allow Kardashian to wear Marilyn Monroe’s iconic Happy Birthday Mr President dress to the event – six decades after he designed the sketch of the original design

Mackie was just 23 when he sketched the original design for the dress while working as an assistant to fashion legend Jean Louis, who created the dress specifically for Monroe to wear when she performed Happy Birthday to then-President John F. Kennedy in May. 19, 1962.

This isn’t the first time he’s spoken out to criticize members of the Kardashian family; in November 2021, the designer – who quit his role as Louis’ assistant to become a fashion major in his own right – hit out at reality stars for being “famous for being famous”.

He also accused the famous siblings of “copying” designs he’s created for singer Cher over the years, telling Page Six, “You know, they made a lot of money, so I guess there is something to be said about that.

He also noted that there was a real risk of the dress being damaged on the red carpet; Kardashian changed into a replica dress before entering the event to prevent her from being injured

“A few of them really copied Cher’s clothes line for line, beat for beat, which is interesting. It’s like, whatever. I made those [designs] it’s been so many years that I don’t care about them being copied or anything. It’s kind of a compliment, really.

As well as insisting that Monroe was the only person who should have worn the dress, Mackie also raised concerns about the damage that could have been done to the legendary dress at the Met Gala – joining a long list of fashion historians and costume experts who have decried the decision to allow the delicate piece to be released from its carefully preserved storage.

One such critic was author Michelle Morgan, who has written several books on Monroe’s life, lambasted the decision to let the glamorous dress be worn again in a red carpet environment, saying it could have damaged the dress with “sweat” and “makeup”.
