CHARLESTON – The 10th Annual West Virginia Bands Invitational Championship will feature 45 high school groups from across the state this Saturday at the University of Charleston Stadium, Laidley Field.
In 2017, the West Virginia State Legislature proclaimed the invitation “the official West Virginia State Marching Band Championship.”
âThe West Virginia Marching Band Invitational is a great opportunity for us to celebrate the hard work and dedication of our wonderful marching band students,â Governor Jim Justice said. âIt is always a pleasure to witness their talents and their joy in music and the arts.
“This invitation gives us the opportunity to showcase the musical talents of West Virginia students,” said Randall Reid-Smith, curator of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History. âOver the past few years, the department has partnered with the Save The Music Foundation and generous donors to provide musical instruments to colleges statewide. Now these students are entering high school where they are helping to develop these marching bands. This invitation is a way for us to highlight this growing interest in music.
Since 2010, the partnership with Save The Music Foundation has awarded grants totaling $ 4,800,000 to 120 colleges in 55 counties of Mountain State.
The invitation includes the judging of the competitions for music, musical effect, general effect, march, percussion, drum major, color guard, majorettes and twirls. A Miss Majorette contest is also organized during the event.
A special drumline competition will also be featured as part of the competition. Preliminary tours will begin at 3 p.m. on the State Capitol complex and feature drums from 10 schools. A full schedule of fanfare and drumline competitions is listed below.
The invitation will begin at 8:55 a.m. and continue throughout the day, culminating with a rewards program that evening. Admission is $ 8 for ages 12 and over and $ 7 for ages 11 and under.
