Ed Sheeran almost quit music when he became a father

Becoming a father had a profound impact on Ed Sheeran, who nearly gave up music altogether when his daughter, Lyra Antarctica, was born in 2020. Sheeran met his wife, Cherry Seaborn, long before her success made him a big star. Although they only started dating in 2015, Sheeran and Seaborn had known each other for 11 years when they attended secondary school together in Suffolk, England. The couple started dating in 2015, married in 2019 and welcomed the arrival of their first daughter, Lyra, in September 2020.

In a May 19 Instagram post, Sheeran announced the birth of his second daughter, making him a two-time daughter-dad. The post, which mirrors the announcement of Lyra’s birth, shows two tiny baby socks on a brown knitted blanket. “I want you all to know that we had another beautiful baby girl,” the singer wrote. “We are both so in love with her and thrilled to be a family of 4 x.”

The birth of Sheeran’s daughter, Lyra, changed the artist’s life. In a September 2021 interview, Sheeran told GQ, “When my daughter was born, I just said, ‘Maybe it’s me now.’ I wasn’t really explaining it, but I felt so come to me that I thought, “Well, that’s what I’m supposed to do now.”

Overwhelmed by the joys and difficulties of being a new parent, Sheeran stopped creating. “I quit playing guitar, quitting songwriting, and quitting singing,” he said. After about four months of stalled creativity, Sheeran visited a friend and fellow musician who was also considering retirement. “I told him I needed something because after about four months I had lost all purpose,” Sheeran explained. “Even though my new goal was to be a dad, if you asked me what I did, I wouldn’t be able to tell you.”

After much soul-searching, Sheeran decided to return to his craft. “I asked [myself], what could be more important for my daughter and my family? Is it being there 110% of the time… Or is it having a daughter who knows her mom and dad have a great work ethic and really love their jobs?

Now Sheeran seems to have found a way to do it all. After releasing his fifth album, = (pronounced “equal”) in 2021, Sheeran has embarked on his fourth world tour, the +–=÷x Tour (pronounced “the Mathematics Tour”), which will have him on the road for 12 years. months, presenting 75 shows in more than 20 countries. However, this time, Sheeran is taking his kids on tour with him.
