This unique product is the beauty of the collaboration between two creative souls; kathak dancer Mrunal and book artist Aditi. Their journey together explores the intersection of their practices and a shared passion for Asian traditions and culture.
This is a limited edition, handcrafted product designed to be dynamic and tactile in a fun way. Essentially circular, the book can be unfolded and placed on a flat surface to take the shape of a sphere. Recycled paper produced from fine cotton waste is used, embellishing each page with a unique natural texture. The deliberately preserved frayed edges come from the organic process of lifting the handmade paper off the platform frame. Experiments with different hand binding techniques resulted in the book being glued to the spine for added strength and longevity. The hand-dyed red cotton fabric, which adorns the back and the box, evokes an emotion of love and symbolizes a sacred beginning in Indian culture recalls the Alta. The Alta adorns the palms and feet of a Kathak dancer, adding a graceful prominence to their form.
Kathakraang illuminates the subtle hand movements or Kathak hasta-mudras through her intricate line drawings. These are carefully transferred onto handmade paper with an old engraving technique. Each graphic is displayed in a silkscreen print stretched over a wooden frame. In this stenciling method, ink is squeezed through the screen using a squeegee to “draw” the imprint of the pattern onto the surface. For this handcrafted set of books, 6,000 pages were screen printed over 70 days, overcoming the practical challenges of faster ink absorption by the handmade paper and screen.
An art form in its own right, this rigorous process involves total engagement of mind and body, creating an internal rhythm. The aged edges of the paper are dipped in the same red ink for visual depth and vibrancy. The craft box completes the history of the making of this artist’s book. It was designed and sized to hold it in a crescent format.
The hope is that each copy of Kathakraang will find a space to be enjoyed as a work of art. It must be cherished for its dialogue with dance and celebrated for its semblance with life.
